“Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement. Nothing can be done without hope and confidence”

These are the sentiments echoed by two promising sisters heralding from the Parish of St. James with sights set on a brighter future at the University of the West Indies, Mona. Stanea and Stania McIntosh, two graduates of the Montego Bay High School for Girls, have consistently performed
excellently in both their academic and extra-curricular endeavors. As they both exit post-secondary schooling at the CAPE level, Stania and Stanea have achieved a rare, if the not unique distinction of any student in Jamaica. By the end of their time at the Montego Bay High School Sixth Form, they have served as Head Girl and Student Council President for 2 consecutive years respectively with Stania serving in the capacity of Deputy Head Girl in Grade Eleven. Impressive as that may be, they still have one major hurdle left that may prove to be the toughest yet and that is their university tuition.

Stanea McIntosh, an eccentric and passionate advocate with a specific focus on social and environmental development, looks to disrupt the status quo in her quest to become an urban planner. With a long record of accomplishment laden with various positions of authority and community involvement, she has shown that leadership is not a statement but an example for others to follow. She is currently accepted to pursue a Bachelor’s in Geography at the University of the West Indies, Mona where she expects to be consistent in her performance. Not to be outdone, Stania McIntosh, a determined and ambitious scholar has her trajectory set on the medical sciences to become one of Jamaica’s premier medical experts. Never a stranger to accolades, Stania has poured her best efforts into academia which has paid off remarkably to date as she has achieved an impressive fifteen distinctions so far in her CXC examinations. She not only aspires to be a beacon of hope for young ladies like herself, but she wishes to ignite a true sense of altruism with Jamaica’s youth evident through her endless efforts within her school and community. She desires a space on the front lines of modern medicine to become a true nation builder but to do so, she requires as much help as possible.

Both twins have had a less than pleasant upbringing with mother, Burnadine Groves, working as a Health Records Clerk, and father, Stanford McIntosh, working as a mason. While their parents have worked extremely hard and have had to borrow numerous loans to support their children, they have exhausted all options. Furthermore, the twins have two older siblings attending the University of the West Indies who rely upon the limited income that their parents can provide. Stania, through pursuing her degree in Medicine, faces a greater urgency with tuition of US$28,000. She has five CAPE subjects with five distinctions as well as ten CSEC subjects with ten distinctions. Stanea has achieved Four CAPE distinctions as well as 10 CSEC subjects with 8 distinctions.

In the waning weeks before the commencement of her university studies, Stania had been accepted to the University of the West Indies to pursue her degree in the MBBS program (Medicine and Surgery) on a self-financing basis with tuition amounting to 4.34 million JMD. Applications for scholarships have been an ongoing process and she has received some offers. However, the reality remains that her tuition far exceeds what she has gained in scholarships thus far. The family is therefore urging the public and private sector for any assistance in securing a bright future for these girls so they can truly become the nation builders of tomorrow. It is their utmost desire that their story as well as their future actions inspire the following generation to believe in the value of their persistence, the strength of their passion and the scope of their limitless potential.
